Many users have reported that Xbox One users have been unable to join or create newsgroups to chat with their friends during game sessions. The initial problem was related to the closure of NAT. For many users, however, 9234020 occurs despite open NAT. Some affected users suspect that the problem is related to their ISP because the problem no longer occurs when they connect their console to the access point.
What caused the 9234020 error on Xbox One?
We have addressed this particular issue by reviewing various user reports and testing different recovery strategies that some affected users have successfully used to resolve this issue. It appears that this specific problem can be caused by a number of different scenarios. Here’s a list of possible culprits:
- closed NAT
- Firmware error
Power cycle
- Make sure the Xbox console is turned on.
- Press and hold the Xbox button on the console for approximately 10 seconds.
- When the console has come to a complete stop, release the button.
- Disconnect all cables connected to the console, including the power cable.
- Leave the console alone for a few minutes.
- Connect all cables and the power cord to an electrical outlet.
- Press the Xbox button on the console to activate it.
- After activation, try to join a group and see if there are any updates.
Check that the NAT is closed.
- Make sure your Xbox One console is connected to the network.
- Open a standard web browser and enter the following address:
- 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
- If the default setting does not work, refer to your router’s manual for the correct address to access the settings.
- Log in to the user identification page. The router’s default data is administrator and 1234.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Expand the transport capacity of NAT.
- Make sure the UPnP option is enabled. The steps to access the UPnP configuration may vary depending on the manufacturer of the router.
- After enabling the UPnP option, reboot the router and console.
- Try connecting to the group again and look for improvements.
Several users have indicated that enabling UPnP has solved the problem. By enabling UPnP, all applications and games can automatically redirect ports to resolve connection problems.

Restart the IP helper service.

2) Type services.msc and click OK to open the services window.
3) Press IP Wizard and then Restart.
4) Right-click IP Helper and select Properties.
5) Make sure the startup type is set to Automatic, then click Apply > OK.
6) Check if you can make or join a party on Xbox One.
Reconnecting the Xbox Oneconsole
The Xbox One console caches all temporary files. If these files are damaged, you will receive error message 9231806. Empty the cache to solve the problem.
You can do this by reconnecting the console:
1) Press and hold the Xbox button on the console until it turns off.
2) Unplug the power cord after turning off the power.
3) Release the cable for at least 1 minute.
4) Reconnect the power cord. Then press and hold the Xbox button on the console until it lights up.
5) See if you can make or join a party on Xbox One.
